  • James Cameron says he's not a screamer. A yeller, maybe. But not a screamer.
"Working with hundreds of extras day after day for months makes yelling a way of life," said the director, who was criticized for driving the crew of the upcoming "Titanic" too hard. "Almost never was there anger in it.
"In the darkest depths of the shoot, when responsibility for the budget overruns was a crushing burden, I was prone to some frustrated outbursts."
At $200 million, "Titanic" is the most expensive film ever made, Cameron admitted in Time magazine's Dec. 8 edition. Cameron added that the same was said about his last four films, including the successful "True Lies" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."
"In any event, many of our favorite epics from the '30s, '40s and '50s would cost more than 'Titanic' if made today."

The woman once billed as "The Baddest One-Chick Hit-Squad That Ever Hit Town" is back.
Pam Grier made her name playing revenge-minded characters in black exploitation films of the 1970s. In her new role, she's a bagwoman for a crook in the Quentin Tarantino-directed "Jackie Brown," which stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro.
It turns out that Tarantino is a big fan of Grier. He even has a poster in his office of her 1973 movie "Coffy," which made the "baddest" boast.
While some believe "Jackie Brown" could rejuvenate Grier's career, she said in Time magazine's Dec. 8 issue that she never was away, appearing in regional theater productions in Colorado and in films like "Posse" and "Original Gangstas."
"I was honing my skills for when that Quentin Tarantino call would come," she said.

For Ted Turner, giving away money is almost as difficult as making it. At least he can hire folks to do the work.
"You have to hire people to do it," said Turner, the CNN founder who pledged $1 billion in September to the United Nations. "They've got to analyze things really carefully. You've got to discuss how much you're going to give to this organization and how much to that one.
Turner, 59, said his foundation donates money to more than 400 organizations, usually giving one-third to half of what's requested.
"It's a game. It's like making money is a game," Turner said in Sunday's USA Weekend magazine, which excerpted his interview for an upcoming ABC special titled "Greed."

Rain didn't stop this Tom show.
Tom Arnold performed as grand marshal Sunday night for the Hollywood Christmas Parade in Los Angeles.
It was one of the rare occasions that rain has swept the 66-year-old staple of the Hollywood holiday season. Arnold, who stars in the WB network's "The Tom Show," beat the weather with a red and white umbrella.
The parade was carried live by the fledgling network. It featured dancers, marching bands playing "Hooray for Hollywood," 20 sparkling floats and celebrities in classic cars.

Kurt Vonnegut and Nick Nolte, separated at birth?
Vonnegut wants to see some of his books turned into movies, including his 1973 "Breakfast of Champions," writes syndicated columnist Liz Smith.
According to Smith, Vonnegut wants Nolte to play the lead in "Breakfast" because he is "a dead ringer for me."
The book features a car salesman who suffers a nervous breakdown and believes in UFOs. Vonnegut himself once sold cars and wrote science fiction.

Barbara Barrie, who plays Brooke Shield's grandmother on "Suddenly Susan," wants the world to know she's also a colon cancer survivor.
"I hope they residually say, `Oh yeah, she's the one who had the serious colon cancer. Look at her, she had a colostomy. She's jumping around on the furniture,'" Barrie said.
Barrie recently released her book "Second Act: Life After Colostomy and Other Adventures." She said she wants to share her story so other people won't be afraid of their own health problems.
"I'm going to bring it out into the open. It shocks people," Barrie said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. She has been free of cancer for three years.
