Daniel S. Oliveira
NEW BEDFORD -- Funeral services were held yesterday for Daniel S. Oliveira, 82, of New Bedford, who died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a brief illness. He was the widower of Maria C. Oliveira; she died May 26.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Pedro S. and Leonora V. (Pereira) Oliveira, he lived in Sao Miguel, Azores, until 1937 when he returned to New Bedford. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Mr. Oliveira was a shell inspector for Chamberlain Manufacturing until retiring.
He was a member of the Mount Carmel Senior Citizens, Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 4, and was the oldest living member at the Portuguese Sports Club.
He was an Army veteran having served as a private during World War II.
Survivors include his dear friend, Maria Silveira of New Bedford, who helped care for Mr. and Mrs. Oliveira; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of seven late brothers and five late sisters.
His funeral Mass was at Immaculate Conception Church and burial was in Acushnet Cemetery, Acushnet.
Arrangements were by the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St.
Helena P. Tomasik
SOMERS POINT, N.J. -- Helena P. Tomasik, 84, of Marmora, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Shore Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Edmund J. Tomasik.
Born in New Bedford, Mass., she lived in Marmora for the past two years.
Survivors include three daughters, Dianne T. Adamowski and her husband, Paul, of Marmora, Ann Edmunds and her husband, Phillip Groff, of Henderson, Nev., and Valerie Joseph and her husband, Daryl, of Campbell, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Stacy Smith and her husband, Gregory, of Petersburg, Carrie Adamowski of Atlanta, and John Adamowski of Edison.
Her funeral service and interment will be private in the Polish National Cemetery, New Bedford.
Arrangements are by the Godrey Funeral Home, 644 S. Shore Road, Palermo.
Raymond E. Martin
ROSELAND, Fla. -- Raymond Edmond "Ray" Martin, 76, of Barefoot Bay died Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at Sebastian River Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Catherine Martin. The couple was married 49 years.
He was born in New Bedford, Mass., and moved to Barefoot Bay 2½ years ago from Marathon.
He was a dispatcher for Conrail for 43 years in New Haven, Conn., and Springfield, Mass.
He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10210 and the Moose Lodge, both in Sebastian; and the American Legion Post, and a member and past exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge 2139, both in Marathon.
Mr. Martin was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Barefoot Bay.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Carol R. Edmondson of Rapid City, S.D.; a son Raymond Martin Jr. of Beacon Falls, Conn.; a brother, Roger Martin of Tavares; two sisters, Rachel Desjardins, of Freetown, Mass., and Lucille Drapeau, of New Bedford; and two granddaughters.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., today at the Strunk Funeral Home Chapel, 1623 N. Central Ave., Sebastian.
Angelo D. Roppolo
BOSTON -- Angelo D. "Angie" Roppolo, 85, of New Bedford died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Brigham & Women's Hospital after a short illness. He was the widower of Margaret (Fantone) Roppolo and the son of the late Anthony and Mary T. (Barba) Roppolo.
Before his retirement, he was the much-loved bartender at the Cathay Temple Restaurant in Mattapoisett. He recently participated in the ceremonies marking the restaurant's closing after 49 years.
He was a lifelong golfer. He started as a caddie at the Country Club of New Bedford and became an honorary member at the Reservation Golf Club in Mattapoisett. In 1958, he was the City Open runner-up. He was a Reservation Golf Club champion several times.
Mr. Roppolo was a staff sergeant during World War II, serving in China, Burma and India Theaters. He worked as an engineer on the Burma Road.
Survivors include a son, Robert Roppolo of Boston; a daughter, Rita Roppolo of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Pauline DaCosta of North Easton; a brother, Arthur Roppolo of New Bedford; and a grandson, Alex Roppolo of Washington, D.C.
His Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
Alexander J. Duff, 94
NEW BEDFORD -- Alexander J. Duff, 94, of New Bedford, died at home, Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, after a brief illness. He was the widower of Yvonne M. (Bergeron) Duff.
Born in Connecticut, son of the late Peter S. and Aurore (Cadereux) Duff, he lived most of his life in New Bedford. He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Mr. Duff formerly was employed as a commercial artist for Epec Inc.
He was a member of the Holy Name Couples Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his leisure time and was recognized as rendering beautiful paintings and was a wonderful artist.
Survivors include a son, Donald O. Duff of Arizona; two brothers, George Duff of Taunton and Peter J. Duff of New Bedford; two sisters, Marie Hebert of New Bedford and Blanche Simpson of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Robert P. Duff and brother of the late Raymond Duff, Alfred Duff, Alan Duff, Viola Boresoff, Edward Duff, Edna Lariviere and Anna Dubois.
His funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
Arrangements are by the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.
Michael C. Cray
WAREHAM -- Michael Chase Cray, 48, of Old Carr Landing Road, died at home, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000. He was the husband of Jacqui Barber Cray.
Born in Providence, he was the son of Douglas and Barbara Cray of Newburyport. He attended schools in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Virginia, Vermont and New York state.
Mr. Cray was able to combine a lifelong love of fishing and marine life, especially the open and deep waters off the New England shore, with a newspaper career that took him to The Morning Journal, his first full-time posting, in Lisbon, Ohio, and on to The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.
It was at the Herald where he met his wife and the young couple moved along the Eastern seaboard to Maine where he became a staff reporter at the Kennebec Journal in Augusta. He joined The Day in New London, Conn., in 1979, as a police reporter and feature writer. He won a feature writing award from the New England Press Association in 1987. He also was able to develop and add a weekly fishing column, "Fishing Line" to his newsroom output at The Day.
After leaving The Day in 1987, he became a regional representative for a research and survey group tracking recreational fishing activity for state and federal agencies from Maine to the Florida Keys. From 1993 until last year, when illness kept him from working with sport and, on occasion, commercial fishermen and charter boat skippers, he filed daily and weekly reports to the National Marine Fisheries Service office of highly migratory species. His work on the docks and fishing boats called for collecting and dispatching biological samples to research offices for laboratory analysis.
His closeness to the water began at birth in 1952 in Providence. He learned to swim early and hand line for fish and crabs in the waters of Narragansett Bay at his family home in Bristol, R.I., and on Cape Cod in Harwichport.
Survivors include his widow; his parents; three brothers, Duncan, Kevin and Benjamin; and a sister, Caitlin.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16 at St. Michael's Church, Hope Street, Bristol, R.I.

Anna J. Rego
NEW BEDFORD -- Anna J. (Reynolds) Rego, 68, of North Dartmouth, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness. She was the widow of Leonard Rego.
Born in Lakeville, daughter of the late Maurice A. and Annie M. (Hall) Reynolds, she lived in Dartmouth for the past 38 years.
She attended Plainville Christian Church in New Bedford.
Mrs. Rego enjoyed auto racing, camping, traveling and country music.
Survivors include four daughters, Leeanna Rego of New Bedford, and Anna M. White, Christine L. Rego and Deborah A. Rego, all of North Dartmouth; five sons, George M. Rego of North Dartmouth, Gregory B. Rego of Kingston, R.I., Kenneth J. Rego of Portsmouth, R.I., and Bruce A. Rego and Wayne Rego, both of New Bedford; a sister, Barbara L. Perry of Hatchville; a sister-in-law, Emily Sylvia of Warwick, R.I.; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Maurice A. Reynolds Jr., Thelma A. Reynolds, Bertha A. Cornell, Violet Mason and Dorothy W. Wray.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kirby Funeral Home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

Sidney L. Trahan Sr.
FALL RIVER -- Sidney Lee Trahan Sr., 67, of Borden East, formerly of Quequechan Street, died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000. He was the former husband of Irene (Benoit) Trahan.
Born in Lake Arthur, La., he was the son of the late Fernest and Alice (Estre) Trahan. Mr. Trahan was a long-haul truck driver with several local companies for more than 40 years. He retired in 1996 from Island Express Trucking in Pawtucket, R.I.
Survivors include five sons, Richard Trahan of Dartmouth, Robert Trahan, Sidney Trahan Jr., Scott Trahan and Steven Trahan, all of Fall River; two daughters, Donna Arruda and Stacey Costa, both of Fall River; a sister, Ethel Rice of Fall River; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be at 8:45 a.m. Thursday from the L.O. Paradis Funeral Home, 1555 Pleasant St., followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church. Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
Rita L. Souza
NEW BEDFORD -- Rita L. (Vigeant) Souza, 67, of New Bedford, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, after a long illness. She was the widow of Frederick C. Souza.
A lifelong New Bedford resident, daughter of the late George and Rhea (Ledoux) Vigeant, she was a communicant of St. Joseph-St. Therese Church.
Mrs. Souza was a bookkeeper/secretary for Old Colony Transportation and retired from Clean Rentals. She was a member of Acushnet Jolly Seniors.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading and especially loved being with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Robert Souza of New Bedford; three daughters, Rhea Rapoza and Leah Hathaway, both of New Bedford, and Theresa J. Goyette of North Dartmouth; nine grandchildren, Erin Rapoza, Megan Rapoza, Ryan Goyette, Lauren Goyette, Geena Goyette, Victoria Hathaway, Dylan Hathaway, Matthew Souza and Bailey Souza; a brother, Normand Vigeant of North Dartmouth; her friend, Jacqueline Walker of Fairhaven; a brother-in-law, Emile Frenette of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late George Vigeant, Romeo Vigeant, Rene Vigeant and Theresa Frenette.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph-St. Therese Church.
Arrangements are by the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.
Helen Holt, 96
FAIRHAVEN -- Helen (Roulich) Holt, 96, of Fairhaven, died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Our Lady's Haven, after a long illness. She was the widow of Fred Holt.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late John and Theresa (Blecha) Roulich, she lived most of her life in Fairhaven.
Mrs. Holt was a homemaker and enjoyed being with her family.
She was a former recording secretary for the Oxford Terrace Seniors, a member of St. Mary's Church Golden Agers and a coordinator for senior citizen's bus tours.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara J. Forcier and her husband, Robert, of Fairhaven; a grandson, Richard Forcier of Fairhaven; and three great-grandsons.
Her funeral was private.
Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St.
