BASEBALL
Eric Davis, who underwent colon cancer surgery and returned to help the Baltimore Orioles reach the American League championship series, has been named the Roberto Clemente Man of the Year. Davis, 35, missed much of the season but rejoined the Orioles on Sept. 15. "I intend to live up to the Clemente spirit of helping others," Davis said. "Hopefully because of this, I can increase the public's awareness regarding testing and precautions for colon cancer." ... A judge ordered former San Francisco Giants scout Luis Rosa to stand trial on charges he sexually molested young players at his Dominican training camp and also ordered a separate civil trial against the Giants, which ran the minor league camp in San Pedro de Macoris, 60 miles west of Santo Domingo. No date was set for either trial. Rosa, 61, had pleaded innocent to charges of sexual molestation and fraud and was being held without bail. He claims the Giants abandoned him after pressuring him to resign on June 13.
BASKETBALL
Dennis Rodman must decide if he really wants to play for the Bulls, says coach Phil Jackson, who isn't sure Chicago can win another NBA title without the tattooed rebounding machine. "My message to management was if we couldn't sign Brian Williams, we had to have Dennis -- and we didn't sign Williams. We need Dennis' fire. We need that player who can instill some fear," Jackson said yesterday, a day before Rodman was to announce whether he will return. ... Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal, injured in Tuesday night's exhibition game at Denver, was diagnosed with an abdominal strain. O'Neal is expected to be out a minimum of one week, the team said. ... The Dallas Mavericks signed 6-foot-6 guard Reggie Freeman to a non-guaranteed, one-year contract after he was cut by Milwaukee. The Bucks had signed the former Texas star as a free agent after he went unclaimed in the 1997 NBA draft. ... Connecticut standout Nykesha Sales has mononucleosis and is out indefinitely, becoming the second leading player sidelined before the start of the Huskies' season. Sales, a senior who is the team's top returning scorer, could resume light workouts by early next month. The Huskies lost Shea Ralph for the entire season when she re-tore a ligament in her right knee.
FOOTBALL
Eddie Robinson, college football's winningest coach, couldn't wait to get back to his Grambling team after being released from the hospital yesterday. "I can't stay away from football," he said. Robinson, 78, had been admitted for breathing difficulties. Robinson is retiring this year after 55 seasons and 408 victories as Grambling's coach. ... The Cowboys have signed Emory Smith, younger brother of star running back Emmitt Smith, to their practice squad. Emory, also a running back, said being on a team with Emmitt "is something I've been wanting to do since I've been playing football. I just hope some day the Cowboys can activate me." Emory was cut by the Green Bay Packers during training camp this summer. ... Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton, who was cleared by a Dallas County grand jury, has been sued by a former mistress who accused him previously of rape. Tina Hill, 31, alleges Newton raped her in her mobile home on June 15, and is suing for unspecified damages. On Sept. 2, a grand jury in neighboring Dallas County voted not to indict Newton on a sexual assault charge. ... Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, who won $49 million in an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL, testified yesterday that the league's decision to charge the Rams a relocation fee amounted to extortion. The St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission is suing the NFL for $130 million, saying the league tried to stop the Rams from moving here.
GOLF
Ben Crenshaw, a four-time member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, was selected to be captain of the squad when it tries to reclaim the Cup in 1999 at The Country Club in Brookline. The announcement by PGA of America president Ken Lindsay came three weeks after the United States failed for the fifth time in seven tries to bring the Ryder Cup home, losing to Europe 14½-13½ in Spain last month.The choice of Crenshaw, 45, made sense in that he is a veteran player with Ryder Cup experience. He also is active on the PGA Tour and will be in good position to evaluate players.
MISCELLANY
The U.S. national soccer team signed a multiyear deal with Nike that is reportedly worth about $120 million over 10 years. The agreement will enable the U.S. Soccer Federation to move ahead with its Project 2010, which has set a goal of winning the World Cup by the end of the next decade. "What we're ending up with is that we're at the top of what national associations get in sponsorship," USSF president Alan Rothenberg said. "And if we're not on the top, we're very close."
TENNIS
Boris Becker, playing perhaps his final major tournament at home, was knocked out of the Eurocard Open yesterday, along with second-ranked Michael Chang and three other seeded players. Becker, the defending champion, lost 7-6 (12-10), 6-4 to Richard Krajicek, the 1996 Wimbledon champion, who advanced to the third round in a battle of big serves and fierce volleys on the fast indoor surface. Chang's ouster by Cedric Pioline followed the exits of No. 4 Goran Ivanisevic, No. 6 Carlos Moya and No. 8 Sergi Bruguera. ... Martina Hingis, the world's top-ranked player, has withdrawn from next month's Ameritech Cup because of an injured right heel.
