WAREHAM -- Recycling-ready town residents who were wondering when their shiny, new bins would arrive won't have to wait much longer.
Delays caused by staff vacations and vacancies led to about a two-week delay in the delivery of recycling bins by ABC Disposal Inc., company Operations Manager Bill Poliquin said yesterday.
ABC Disposal Inc., a New Bedford-based firm, won the contract to distribute them to 3,000 residents who hired the firm for trash collection. The bins were delivered to the company yard July 8 and were scheduled for distribution within the next week.
"We were delayed a couple of weeks," Mr. Poliquin said. "We had a tremendous amount of vacation time among the employees, and we had some people leave, so it was tough to make that up. We're in the process of delivering them, starting last week."
Among the difficulties facing ABC Disposal was a delay in receiving payment for services from about a third of the customers who said they wanted recycling bins.
"We sent out a mass mailing of post cards a while ago, to ask if people were interested in getting service, including recycling," Mr. Poliquin said.
The company needed at least 3,000 responses to fulfill the needs of the contract, Mr. Poliquin said.
"We didn't get enough back the first time, so the town asked us to do another mailing.
"We delayed delivery to find out what the final count will be," Mr. Poliquin said. "We want to do it all in one shot, not deliver most of the bins and then go back and deliver another 100."
While the second mailing brought a satisfactory number of responses, only two-thirds of those customers have paid for their services, Mr. Poliquin said, leaving about 900 to 1,000 potential customers who might contact the firm.
"I think most people have good intentions," he added.
