West Marine sponsors Earth Day flea market

NEW BEDFORD -- West Marine later this month will be sponsoring its second annual Popes Island Earth Day nautical flea market and cleanup to help raise funds for the Coalition for Buzzards Bay.
The nautical-supply firm will be kicking off the boating season April 19 with the flea market as part of a full day of Earth Day activities being planned for New Bedford. The nautical flea market will be held in conjunction with a waterfront cleanup planned for Earth Day.
The flea market will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with both commercial and private vendors invited to rent space to buy, sell or swap marine-related items.
A 10-by-15-foot rental space will sell for $15 and boats up to 30 feet are also welcome to be offered for sale at a $1-per-foot rental space. Admission to the flea market is $1.
All proceeds from space rentals and admission fees will be donated to the Coalition for Buzzards Bay.
Volunteers are also being recruited for a cleanup of the Popes Island Marina and Park from 9 to 11 a.m. ABC Disposal will donate a dumpster for the collection of trash, and rubber gloves and trash bags will also be provided. Prizes will be awarded for individuals and teams filling the most trash bags.
A barbecue for volunteers will be held at the end of the cleanup.
Information on the Popes Island events can be obtained by contacting Mike Yorsten at West Marine, 994-1122, or Bob Rocha at the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, 979-1730.
The Popes Island events are part of a series of Earth Day activities slated that day. There will also be a March of Parks beginning at Buttonwood Park, an Earth Day Parade which will join the March for Parks at Wings Court, and an Earth Day Fair at the YMCA.
There will also be a feature on the underground Railroad at the Friends Meeting House on Spring Street and a night vigil sponsored by Mothers Against Crime and Violence.
