  • IRA: We bombed London bus

British leaders continue quest for peace talks

Photo By Robert Barr, Associated Press writer
LONDON -- The IRA claimed responsibility yesterday for a blast that ripped through a double-decker bus in central London, killing one person and injuring nine. Police said they believed the bomb was detonated accidentally and the carrier may have been among the victims.
Two people were arrested yesterday under anti-terrorism laws, Scotland Yard said, but it refused to say whether they were connected to the Sunday night explosion. Police also said a weapon was recovered from the wreckage, but gave no details. More...

    Vineyard weathers a Westport winter

Photo By David Levesque, Standard-Times staff writer
When it comes to weathering a harsh New England winter, Carol Russell says her acres of grape vines -- now bare and jutting out of the freezing soil -- are much like humans.
"If people get a flu in November, they have a very difficult time getting healthy during the rest of the winter," explained the vice president of Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery.
"Like a human, the vine needs to be healthy if it's going to make it through the winter in good shape." More...

Photo By Carol Lee Costa-Crowell, Standard-Times staff writer

"I would like to extend a challenge to my opponent (local restaurateur Howard S. Plaud) to debate me on the issues," Mr. Koczera said. City needle-exchange advocate honored

By Ric Oliveira, Standard-Times staff writer
NEW BEDFORD -- For more than 20 years, Liz DiCarlo has gone far beyond her duties as a nurse.
She is an active member of the community, unafraid of being arrested for what she believes in.
A founding member of the Treatment on Demand Agency, she protested toxic waste material at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod in the 1980s, which led to her arrest for civil disobedience.
She also protested the nation's aid for Nicaragua's Contras and was part of a committee that explored how drugs from Central America made their way to the United States.
Ms. DiCarlo, a first-generation Italian-American, finally has been honored for her contributions to New Bedford and her continuing dedication to fighting the AIDS epidemic. More...

FDA revamping could be in the works

By Lauran Neergaard, Associated Press writer
WASHINGTON -- Government doctors thought they'd finally proved Americans get life-saving new medicines as fast as or faster than Europeans, but critics are insisting that's not good enough.
Afraid the good news could slow congressional efforts to revamp the Food and Drug Administration, its detractors are charging that hidden red tape forces U.S. drug makers to spend 15 years developing a single medicine. More...

    Anti-AIDS campaign targets black men

  • Related: HIV/AIDS and U.S. Blacks
By Robin Estrin, Associated Press writer
BOSTON -- As the director of an AIDS prevention clinic, Lawrence Robinson knows how difficult it is to teach young people -- especially young black males -- about the dangers of unprotected sex.
Once, he was preaching his message to a teen-ager on Boston's streets. "What he said to me was, 'What do I have to look forward to? I'm having sex, I like it, and I'm not going to let anybody take that away from me,"' Mr. Robinson said.
A new state campaign aimed exclusively at black men is trying to reform such attitudes. And health officials say it comes none too soon. More...

Salvi lawyer in uphill fight, analysts say

By Robin Estrin, Associated Press writer
BOSTON -- Attorney J.W. Carney Jr. says his client, John C. Salvi III, was insane when he went on a shooting rampage at two clinics that perform abortions. But good luck getting the jury -- or even his client -- to agree.
The insanity defense rarely works and many legal analysts suggest Mr. Salvi's case will be no different. More...

    Pioneer's legacy:

A family tree with roots in pride, service, confidence

By David Foster, Associated Press writer
Today, he is a family legend. In 1888, at age 18, John Thomas Gayton was asking for trouble.
He was smart, proud, ambitious -- qualities that could get a black man lynched in the cottonfield country around Yazoo City, Miss. They'd already come for his brother, and J.T. was worried they might come for him.
Then the white doctor who employed him as coachman announced he was heading West to a muddy frontier town called Seattle. Would he like to come along?
J.T. Gayton never looked back. More...

Halstead hopes he doesn't need another miracle

Photo By Eric Gongola, Standard-Times staff writer
The same punch kept coming, again and again, a right hand straight to the chin. But Mike Halstead was feeling too weak in the knees to concern himself with the throbbing in his cheek.
"I had been confined to bed for about three weeks with pneumonia. I wasn't up to par. My doctor told me I shouldn't fight," he said. "But after all those months of training, I had to."
So he did. Or at least he tried, willing himself off his stool and into the line of fire, a sitting duck for the right hand of Manny Teo of Providence. More...

83-57 win wraps up Big 3 championship

Photo By Buddy Thomas, Standard-Times Senior Sports Editor
NEW BEDFORD -- It was a game of runs and, unfortunately for New Bedford, Brockton ran a little more and a lot longer on its way to running the Whalers out of their own gym.
Tory Burke scored a game-high 21 points and led four Brockton players in double figures as the visiting Boxers ended New Bedford's three-year reign as Big 3 champion with an 83-57 victory last night, handing the Whalers what coach Ed Rodrigues called "our worst home loss in memory."
The win gave the 14-4 Boxers a sweep (4-0) of their Big 3 schedule and dropped New Bedford to 1-2 in the conference and 13-5 overall. More...

Key goal by Stevens fuels Kings' comeback

    By The Associated Press
INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Kevin Stevens wasn't happy about the way he left the Boston Bruins. In his first game against them, he gained a measure of revenge.
Dealt to the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 25 for Rick Tocchet, Stevens finally scored Monday in his eighth game with his new team and helped turn a two-goal third-period deficit into a 3-3 tie. More...

The weighting is over for a healthy Clemens

By Sean McAdam, New England Sports Service
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- He can't just slip unobtrusively into camp. Always, with Roger Clemens, the arrival is an event.
His teammates can stroll in, drop their equipment and quickly blend into the mix. Not Clemens.
Usually, there is some unresolved issue at stake. What does he think about the new manager? How does he feel about the trade of a close friend? What about that scrape in a Houston bar? How is the shoulder, the elbow, the groin?
This spring was no different in that regard. More...
